Serving the Community

Tuckerbox is a food outlet designed to assist people struggling to meet their budgets. The food is provided by Foodbank NSW. Pensioners, people living with disabilities, and working families on tight budgets are members of Tuckerbox.

The annex at the back of the church is transformed into a small grocery and afternoon tea centre on Saturdays from 2 pm to 4 pm. Groceries, bread, dairy products and fresh fruit and vegetables are available for a nominal handling fee. Holy Cross volunteers manage and run Tuckerbox. Participation is by an annual membership fee of $2 per family.

All are welcome to drop in for afternoon tea, a chat, to browse and to shop.

Social Justice & the Environment

Holy Cross actively seeks to be involved locally and globally in issues of importance. On 25 March we are supporting and participating in the Walk 4 Justice 4 Refugees.

On 19 March we had the privilege to hear Ros talking about Ecumenical Accompaniers and Ahmed sharing some of his story about living in Gaza.

The Ecumenical Accompaniment Programme in Palestine and Israel provides a presence and support mostly for Palestinian people, especially children and older people as they go about their daily lives, negotiating checkpoints and other security barriers. Knowing about the humiliations and traumas that the people face every day is very distressing.

It is also deeply concerning to know about the situation in Gaza, where nearly two million people live in great poverty amidst destroyed buildings, and where young people have no hope.

St John's Care

Holy Cross actively supports the work of St John's Care in Reid in assisting the poor and homeless of Canberra. Members of the congregation donate groceries at each Sunday morning service. The parish also makes regular financial donations to St John's Care and some members volunteer their time.

Holy Cross encourages its members to support all aspects of the work of Anglicare for caring for those in need in the local region.

ACT for Peace

Internationally, Holy Cross supports ACT for Peace and the Christmas Bowl, programs of the National Council of Churches in Australia. These programs include overseas disaster relief, development projects and advocacy for peace, justice and ecological wellbeing.
